Bust Biofilms with Stevia

The discovery of biofilms and the nature of chronic Lyme disease was first documented by Dr. Eva Sapi in 2010 igniting a storm of controversy. Her discovery, dating back to 2008 was revealed in the successful documentary Under Our Skin and brought attention to a possible cause for the lingering symptoms of chronic Lyme disease around the world.

In addition to revealing the existence of biofilm formation, Dr. Sapi showed that certain enzymes were effective in eradicating the biofilms that protect the disease from treatment. Serrapeptase, Lumbrokinase and Nattokinase are three enzymes that have a in vitro effect that dissolves the biofilms and allows treatment to destroy the various forms of the Borrelia bacteria.

Dr. Sapi came under attack from medical mainstream – the same mainstream that continued to debate the existence of chronic Lyme disease, but Dr. Sapi persevered.

Now after years of medical debate Johns Hopkins has published test results that back Dr. Sapi’s work. “Eradication of Biofilm-Like Microcolony Structures of Borrelia burgdorferi by Daunomycin and Daptomycin but not Mitomycin C in Combination with Doxycycline and Cefuroxime” was published last month (Feb 2016) giving a nod to Dr. Sapi’s discovery and once again going toe-to-toe with Harvard and the CDC who continue to insist Lyme disease is hard to catch and easy to treat.

The Johns Hopkin’s study reports the success of certain antibiotic combinations against biofilms, but Dr. Sapi has been on a quest to find a natural treatment.

Late last year in November 2015, Dr. Sapi along with six other scientists published the exciting results. Effectiveness of Stevia Rebaudiana Whole Leaf Extract Against the Various Morphological Forms of Borrelia Burgdorferi in Vitroshows both the effectiveness of Stevia against existing biofilms and biofilm formation.

Mark Zaretsky writing for New Haven Register says,

Sapi’s research on the role of biofilm — which she says is “known to be almost impossible to eliminate it from the body” — has been controversial, with many of the doctors who treat Lyme disease continuing to do with a maximum of four weeks of antibiotics.

“After that, if you’re still sick, it has to be something else,” she said, describing the prevailing feelings that attribute any post-treatment sickness to something called “post-Lyme syndrome.”

“After that, if you’re still sick, it has to be something else,” she said, describing the prevailing feelings that attribute any post-treatment sickness to something called “post-Lyme syndrome.”

Sapi first published research on her findings in 2012 in the online publication PLOS-ONE, a peer-reviewed, international science journal. She said that at one point, she organized a conference that some others in the field tried to shut down because of fears that it would propagate her way of thinking.

She currently is waiting for a new research paper, now in a second level of review, to get accepted “in a highly-rated journal.” The paper argues “that biofilm exists, can persist in the body and can find ways to hide,” she said.

If it is accepted, “it should at least open the door” to other forms of thinking, Sapi said.

“If people don’t want to study something, they should at least let someone else study it,” she said.

Among the other research done locally on Lyme disease is a 2012 study by the Yale University School of Medicine that found that while mice infected with borrelia burgdorferi responded to antibiotics, traces of proteins from the bacteria remained long after the bacteria itself had been wiped out.

The lead author of that study, Dr. Linda Bockenstedt, the Harold W. Jockers Professor of Medicine and Rheumatology at Yale School of Medicine, didn’t immediately return calls for comment on Sapi’s work, but has previously told the Connecticut Post, with regard to Sapi’s work, that it’s hard to make a good determination about the behavior of borrelia burgdorferi based solely on test tube research.

“Biofilm requires a certain number of bacteria in a small space to form,” Bockenstedt told the Post. “Whether it would form in a human or animal infected by a tick bite is not known.”

But Sapi’s research suggests that it’s not just proteins that get left behind.

The borrelia bacteria, which has been around for 15 to 20 million years, is “so smart” and has learned over all those years how to survive, she said. “Inside, they have different cells” which, like colonies of ants, have different tasks, Sapi said.

“Some of the cells are the sleepers,” she said, and “antibiotics don’t work on the sleepers.”

The recommended dose of organic whole leaf stevia is 20 drops two times per day.

Thanks for all the great info. Where can you get the whole leaf organic stevia?

  2. Sharon says:

I’m using NuNaturals alcohol free stevia. (Stevia rebaudiana leaf 200mg. ) Is this correct? Thanks in advance

  3. Alexandra in Idaho says:

Hi. Have any of you seen any improvement? Those that commented back in April.

    Please and thank you, Alexandra

  4. Sherry Serpa says:

My experience with Whole Leaf Stevia to treat my Lyme diagnosis of over 2 years has been very positive. I have just been using it for nine weeks or so and my CD test numbers have risen more than 40 or 50 points, the best improvement I’ve experienced. Along with other support supplements I’m hopeful I’m on the right track.

  5. Dolores says:

    What is the dosage?

I live in Spain and my autistic son has a abnormally high value of Borrellia Burgdorferi antibodies.

The doctor, who studied in the USA, has prescribed massive amounts of antibiotics and antifungal agents such as:

    – Clarithromycin
    – Penicillin
    – Tinidazole
    – Nystatin
    – Naltrexone
    – Delimmun (Inosine Pranobex)
    – Stevia

I was wondering if anybody had any experience with these drugs and whether they are effective or have side effects. I am aware that Stevia is not dangerous, but what about the others?

    Regards,

    Walter

Hello, I happened on this research ONLY because i was looking for the word Inflammation that i went through as i was talking to someone else about what happens to a person (myself) what the disease does in the whole body. AMAZINGLY THOUGH, i ordered pure STEVIA a week ago before i came upon this site i happened upon and stevia was supposed to be delivered from AMAZON but because of THANKSGIVING it is late. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THE STEVIA I WAS USING (which has been for a few years) since i had the disease –I thought maybe possibly it was the cause of my hair loss. But i began thinking it was NOT PURE so last week i ordered the Organic Real stuff. So tonite while trying to remember the WORD INFLAMMATION that is what is going on in the whole body which AFFECTED MY BRAIN AND MY EYES. I still have blurriness but and a eye floater. Eyesight right now presently is blurred and notice it more because I am sewing for my business on ETSY that I have been waiting to begin. So in my case I was thinking the STEVIA (NOT PURE) WAS A CAUSE FOR MY HAIR LOSS. ONLY BECAUSE STUMBLING UPON THIS SITE I FOUND AS I WAS WAITING FOR STEVIA TO ARRIVE AT MY DOOR –IT HAS BEEN RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT IT TAKES AWAY A FILM AND HIDES THE BACTERIA ETC. I KNOW FATHER GOD , I STILL WENT THROUGH THE DISEASE BUT MY ENERGY IS COMING BACK TO BE IN WAVES. MY COGNIZANCE IS GAINING STRENGTH AND CLARITY–REALIZING REALITY AND CLARITY AND REMEMBERING WHAT I JUST READ. I READ AND I FING MYSELF TESTING MYSELF CONSTANTLY ==ASKING MYSELF WHAT DID YOU JUST READ? SO I KNOW EVERYTHING IS IMPROVING. THERE WERE MANY THINGS IT THE DISEASE AFFECTED. I HAVE HAD IT FOR (3) YEARS. IT IS A DEBILITATING DISEASE BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE IT HAS TO BEAT YOU. YOU WILL COME THROUGH THIS ADVERSITY TRIUMPHANTLY!!! I AM LIVING PROOF AND I WAS FIGHTING THIS ALONE AND NO DR’S. AT ALL EXCEPT FOR THE PILLS YOU TAKE FIRST (2) WEEKS FINDING BULL’S EYE ON HEAD. AS I WAS WASHING HAIR THE TICK LANDED IN MY CUPPED HAND. I SAW THIS AND TOOK A MENTAL NOTE–STRANGE LOOKING TICK I NOTICED. THEN CAME THE BITING AND ITCHING ON MY HEAD. IT WAS LIKE BITING BITES ON MY SCALP. AND THEN BREAKING OUT ON FACE AND NECK . AND THEN I WAS EATING AND WOUL D THROW UP INSTANTLY IN THE BEGINNING! ON AND ON. COULD TELL A WHOLE STORY FOR THE (3YRS.) . IT’S AMAZING AND SURPRISING THAT A SMALL TICK BITE CAN DO OR CHANGED YOUR LIFE IN A DRAMATIC WAY. BUT I AM NOT A SILENT VOICE ANYMORE.

When you take the Stevia drops from Kal Stevia Extract, did you have any chest discomfort? I started it last night and am wondering if it’s from this or from my acid reflux.

  10. Leah says:

What would the dosage be for children? My daughter is 9 years old.

  11. Krystal says:

Hello, I just started on the stevia and other supplements to support my immune system a couple of weeks ago. I feel so much worse and my symptoms are much worse. It worries me that I’m just getting worse and it’s not herx reactions. Big problems with my swallowing, sore throat and sore on the outside of my neck, dry mouth and my tongue feels swollen. Lots of chest pains too. Can herxing while using stevia be pretty serious? Thank you!

    • Jenna Seaver says:

Yes – although I suspect it is your boosted immune system that is causing your herx…anytime your immune system is strengthened or weakened (say due to stress) you will feel a surge in symptoms – don’t despair just hit it harder with treatment and make sure to take Smilax to alleviate the herx…

      • Amanda says:

Also, though, people who are allergic to ragweed will most likely be allergic to stevia since it is also a ragweed.

  12. Kristin says:

    Jenna,
What do you think of the Nutrigenix Stevia brand? Thanks.

  13. Josefina Banks says:

I have raw stevia packets at home and just ate one whole packet and noticed some herxing. Are the packets okay to use also. And should I also use something else with it to kill it off completely? How long do you think treatment of stevia will be? And what can I do to help relieve the herx?

    • Jenna Seaver says:

It depend on how long you have been sick – I have been treating for a decade and will probably treat for another! Stay with it and take Smilax for herxes – you can take up to 4 at a time (450 mg) – take like asprin when you feel a herx come on – it is amazing and very cheap to purchase.

  14. Jill Reid says:

Hi Jenna! I have been taking a comprehensive regime of natural therapies & some antibiotics for about 6 months now for Lyme & Rickettsia & while the symptoms are controlled & I’m feeling quite well … the bacteria are still there. I know this because a couple of times I have run out of medicines & my symptoms return.( headaches, eye fog & increased mucus in nose/throat). My doctors/therapists have recommended strong IV antibiotics 3x a week for a month to try to knockout the bacteria. However I also have Crohns disease & have been taking immunosuppressants on a daily basis for 15 yrs to control this. I’m concerned that the IV treatment will create havoc with my Crohns & possibly cause the biofilm bacteria to gain more resistance. Do you think it would be a good idea for me to try Stevia for a few months as well before considering the antibiotic therapy? How long would it take before the biofilms are knocked out by Stevia?

    • Jenna Seaver says:

I would stay on orals and add anti-parasitic protocol like 1 Tbsp of food grade DE (in 8 oz of water) AND anti-biofilm protocol and just stay with it. It seems to take forever to get rid of once it is chronic, and may take a decade of treatment. I also recommend pulsing one – two days on; and one – two days off. Also, make sure you take a strong probiotic before you sleep (or 4 hours after your PM abx) to offset the effects of the abx on good bacteria in your gut. Good luck!

      • Heidi says:

what is a food grade DE? And what smilex do you recommend? Thanks Jenna.
I keep getting tested negative for Lyme and getting only 2 out of the 10 panels test positive. I think I got Lyme as a kid and never knew it. Now, I have hashimotos and just trying to get better. Horrible neck pain, joint pain, etc. I am doing UV laser treatments and oral supplements. I have not done a antibiotic treatment as my gut is messed up. What supplements do you take and recommend other than Stevia and Smilex?

  15. Mike Goodling says:

    Hi Jenna
Can you use the live Stevia leaves? If so, what would be the dosage? Thanks.

  16. Amanda says:

Hello! Can you suggest a dosage of stevia as a preventive after a known tick bite? My family has been bitten both recently and in the past, yet we don’t seem to have symptoms. (However a few years ago one son was bitten, the area swelled severely and he was given antibiotics–I think it was amoxicillin but can’t recall for sure.) So I’d just like to start giving stevia just in case. How much, and for how long? TIA!

    • Jenna Seaver says:

stevia will not prevent Lyme – it is to combat biofilms in chronic cases – I would use megadoses of himalayan salt (you can buy the capsules on Amazon) to combat possible exposure – a few weeks of bloating is nothing compared to an infection, right?

  17. Larry says:

I take a protein milk shake daily which is sweetened with powdered Stevia. Is it acceptable for Lyme patients to be taking powdered form of Stevia as it tastes quite sweet. Each serving (1 scoop) has .5 grams of sugar, 5 grams of Glutamine, 7 g BCAA’s. Also, does the powdered Stevia help dissolve biofilms? Thanks in advance for your reply.

  18. Laura Majors says:

Do you mix the Stevia with water? Or something else. Also, my Doctor recommended Nutramedix brand. Are you familiar with them? Thanks

  19. Jenni says:

    Hi Jenna
I am just learning about stevia to assist on defeating Lyme disease . I would like to use it on my dog, he is 11 year old shar pei. He has been diagnosed and treated for Lyme with antibiotics three times in his life. He has leaky gut, skin issues due to candida and yeast running through my system … so hoping this will help rebuild his immune system.
Any thoughts on where to start?
Thank you so much for all the details.
The brand I purchased is nutraMedix stevia sweet herb.

  20. Karin says:

    Hi Jenna
I’ve just read this thread with interest. What Stevia product would you recommend for biofilm please? I just opened and rifled through my cupboard and found ‘Sweetleaf’ Liquid Stevia sweetener drops. I’m guessing this is not what I should be taking. Any advice appreciated. Ps. I’m in the UK and not all products are available here. Nutrumedix is but very expensive.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jenna,
I’ve just purchased some stevia leaf powder and wondering how much to use daily to get rid of my lyme disease? I live in Canada and the stevia leaf powder is made by a Canadian company called Organic Traditions. Thank you so much for your help!

  22. Conny Huthsteiner, MD says:

I have had persistent Lyme for about 10 years, but am doing basically well, except for a persistent sacral neuropathy and some cerebellar dysfunction (dizziness, lack of balance with eyes closed). I started taking Stevia from Trader Joe’s, since it is organic whole leaf, with only 11% alcohol content. I took 1/4 tsp first, 4 x a day, then only 3 x day about 5-6 days ago. I noticed on day 2 I was extremely tired, my brain felt like solid clay, I had bad headaches in the night, and I had to start taking naps. My hand and arm neuropathies flared, but abated, as did the eye pain/pressure. I tend to Herx the most at night, but have had to take time out during the days due to exhaustion, much like I had when I received Bionic light treatment with homeopathics many years ago. I cut back on the dose because the Herx reaction was pretty strong, and I need to be able to function. I must say, I am very excited by the results, and so far am praying it will finally get rid of the sacral neuropathies that are a real problem for me. It is really something to sense that each “weak zone” that used to trouble me is now making itself felt, but in fact, I have a sense that my body is cleaning out some of these problem areas. For many months, I have already been using other supplements: have been taking a Lysine combo prep because of a brief Herpes flare on day 1-2, which has subsided. I continue to use it along with high dose turmeric, 5,000 units of Vit D, a herbal metal detoxifier, biotin and B12 sublingual, 1500 evening primrose oil, and Jarrows Vision Optimizer that has a high dose of quercetin and other anti-oxidants, high quality. I try to get as much exercise as I can, drink lots of very clean water, be outdoors a lot. I would advise those people who are feeling too shitty with the treatment to simply cut back on the dose of stevia, not as often in a day or fewer drops. I assume all the commercial preparations have different concentrations, so a specific “dose” is hard to pin down for anyone. Also, going into saunas, getting lots of rest, drinking lemon juice and eating lots of salads and fruit, swimming/jacuzzis all help. Turn off your cell phone, hard wire your computer, try not to work in office buildings or apartments with high EMF fields. Reverse osmose your water, or buy it—-some markets have machines in front of them that sell very clean filtered water. Medicinal clay helps for detox, and works like a dream for Chrohn’s or irritable bowel syndrome
